Changed case - Internal USB Card Reader does not work

Last night I moved to a new case. Everything is perfect but my internal USB card reader just does not work anymore.
The only difference between the two cases is that the new one has 2 x USB 3.0 and 2 x USB 2.0 in the front panel. The old one had one each.

The reader is recognized and shows in device manager as working properly.
Tried uninstalling and rebooting, it installs OK, but doesn't work.

The USB slot in the reader works just fine.

Memory cards work if they are empty, but if I insert one with JPGs in it, I only see generic icons and when trying to preview them I get the following error:

COM Surrogate has stopped working.

Then Windows Explorer freezes, hangs and restarts.

Any ideas?

Thanks for your help,

J

Question: Is your USB built in or install in a PCI or PCIe slot? Some USB cards require a power connecter. The add on card in my system has to be connected in order to work.

It is installed in an external bay. Doesn't require power connection, powers through USB.
Thanks.

Is it connected to original usb header on mobo, have you tried connecting to different usb header on mobo
Have you tried it without usb3.0 or other usb 2.0 connected

Thanks Pauly.
Tried switching mobo USB headers. Didn't work.
Will try disconnecting front panel USB 3.0 and 2.0 and update.
Thanks again.

Silly question; are you sure you have the card reader plugged into the right usb header? Some screen shots would help out a lot in this case.

I know from experience with my card reader, it has a 4 pin connection, where my mobo haeaders has 4/5 pin connections. I had it on a 5 pin and didn't work, then move to a 4 pin and didn't work then switched around the 4 pin (card reader connection) and bingo it worked...something to look into.

Essenbe, Bassfisher,
I swapped to an external USB card reader I had laying around and it works great. No errors whatsoever and much faster that the internal one.

@ Bassfisher: Yeah, I'm plugged to the correct header, 2.0 is a different connector from 3.0 and the 1394 is in a different location, removed from the USB 2.0 bank. Will get a screenshot of error message.

@Essenbe: Tried the COM Surrogate fixes proposed in the thread you suggested, but to no avail.

Maybe I need to buy a good card reader to replace the $5 one I've been using.

Thanks for your help.

Internal Card Reader
I have a built in multi-card reader, seems to work fine. It shows up as 4 drives "G, H, I, J", and I only use "G". Is there a way to hide the other 3? Is there a way to change the drive letter(s)? Right clicking doesn't seem to give this option.
