Ext hdd not recognized in 3.0 USB?

I have two external hdds (2.0).

I thought they could be plugged into a 3.0 USB, but it wasn't recognized.
I thought they were backward compatible.

Just thought I could get faster speeds.

I would like to say that they are backward compatible, albeit mine do the same thing. I have a four gang 3.0 USB card (powered) and it will not see USB 2 products. If you can get a USB 3 HDD holder then that would be the way to go (their not all that expensive).
