I have a failing CPU fan so it’s time for an upgrade, existing is:

Processor AMD Athlon 64 x2 Dual Core Processor 5800+ 3.00 Ghz
4.00 GB memory
64-Bit Windows 7
I wish to change the CPU and memory while I have the case open.

This is the only board i could find ASUS - Motherboards- ASUS M2N-SLI Deluxe
That board only supports DDR2 memory so think your gonna find more memory quite expensive compared to newer DDR3 and it only supports 8GB max although for general computing 4GB is usualy adequate
That mobo supports socket AM2+ so you have options it all depends on your budget, have you considered a new mobo & chip
What are your man uses for the machine and where do you feel it is lacking ?
How old is the mobo? Seeing that it supports only DDR2, I would consider upgrading mobo as well, with the new DDR3 RAM. This way you can really go up on the CPU and RAM.
Other than that your options are limited to just a few CPU upgrades and not sure of your RAM upgrade with out knowing its speed (400, 800 or 1066)....you might be limited there as well.
If you check CPUs at www.newegg.com, they have no Socket AM2 ones for sale, even though they have a checkbox in their power search listings for AM2.
Just out of curiosity, I looked at the BIOS files available for download for the Asus M2N-SLI Deluxe. The oldest one was from 2006, and it clearly was newer than the original shipping BIOS.
I can't recommend upgrading an AM2/DDR2 system. Repair makes sense, if you can do it cheaply.
I just did a quick search on Newegg.......8gb of DDR2 RAM is roughly $130 MORE than 8gb of DDR3 RAM. I also cannot recommend you going the upgrade path if at all possible. We would be happy to help you select some new parts though, if that is an option.

I have to modify my original response. The CPU compatibility list for the M2N-SLI includes AM3 CPUs. It's limited to 95W processors, so you could use an Athlon II X4 640 or a Phenom II X4 945 (but not a 955 or 965).

8GB of DDR2 isn't going to be cheap.
You could buy an AM3+ motherboard, a quad core AMD FX CPU, and 8GB of DDR3 memory for less than $200 new. (If your Windows license is OEM, you'd have to buy it again with a new motherboard.)
Putting any significant upgrade money into such an old system would be foolish. Don't do it. Replace the CPU fan on the old processor. The old system isn't bad. Save your money while you're researching the new system that would make the most sense for you.
