Download and install SpeedFan to see if the fans are running. The fan on the CPU should increase in speed as it gets hotter.

Don't put it on anything except a hard surface. It will sink into a bed or pillow and cut off the air holes and overheat.

The advice to keep your laptop on a hrd surface is correct. Recently, I had to fit a new hard drive in a lady's laptop, it had overheated due to being used on a soft, folded tablecloth for hours. I had to clean out a lot of dust and fibres and thought the motherboard was blown, but it was OK (she was lucky!)

If you can, check this out from Amazon:
Fellowes Laptop Riser - Notebook Stand - Black, Silver: Amazon.co.uk: Office Products

That is the kind of thing you need to keep your laptop really cool. They are available without Cooling fans I believe.

I have an old Dell laptop and I have always felt it was running too hot. I always run SpeedFan to monitor temperatures, recently I noticed the main fan would intermittently stop running. Using compressed air in the vents seems to have fixed the problem even though I never saw any dust or lint while blowing it out. I always use it on a hard surface.

Yes i was just going to mention the compressed air. Give it a nice, strong blow for a fee seconds in each vent... This should clear it

SpeedFan will show your temps and fan speeds for all your hardware. And you can control speeds for fans in the computer.

CPU Temperature
Okay, I bought my new computer with Windows 7 Home Basic (aaargghhh!!!) and it runs great. I like the gadgets but have a question. My CPU temperature is about 140 degrees, and when I run a high-tech game it rises to 160 degrees. It runs fine, but is this what the rest of you are getting?
