The thumbnail cache thumbs_*.db database files are stored in this hidden system folder with more info in the tutorial:

C:\Users\User-Name\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer

Thumbnail Cache - Enable or Disable

According to the original OP in this unresolved Microsoft forum thread, even external hard drive .db files are stored in the same hidden folder. And apparently, Microsoft allows only 449 MB worth of thumbnails before they are deleted and the cache rebuilt. It's even worse in Windows 8. (If this situation has changed, hopefully another Seven Forums member will jump in with updated info.)

How to stop thumbnails cache from destroying itself? (denying - Microsoft Community
