The thing is that your drive's partition(s) are unallocated, but still visible. So I think the data is most likely recoverable. There are multiple apps to work this out with. You are free to use any, but so far I have used only 1 app and it worked.

It's called TestDisk: TestDisk Download - CGSecurity
Note that I'm not marketing anything either. It's a free utility that works from command line.

Download from link, unzip and double click the .exe file. There's no installation. Use the up down arrows to move around and first click "analyze" , then choose your drive, select the Intel/PC partitioning system, and it should work.

So I guess you didn't try Ubuntu? Well if the old jolly Monty Python freezer trick doesn't work give it a go doesn't cost anything and I have recovered data from dead drives with it but who am i??

Hi datetimestamp,

Your first attempt to recovery should be to use a live linux CD/usb pendrive as ICit2lol has suggested.

But instead of Ubuntu I would suggest the following since good documentation is available here and that will make it easy for you to try.

Download Lucid Puppy (Ubuntu-Compatible Build) v5.2.8 ISO from http://puppylinux.org/main/Download%20Latest%20Release.htm It is light and only 132.6 MB.

Make a Bootable pendrive with Rufus v1.3.1 (438 KB) http://rufus.akeo.ie/ It takes less than 2 minutes to create your bootable live Linux pendrive.

For more guidance on the recovery process directly get into the heading Recovering files from the non-bootable Internal Drive - applicable to recovery from any hard drive - in

Lucid Puppy way to recover files from a non-bootable computer

You may also use this tutorial by Golden http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/256518-peppermint3-create-live-cd-dvd-usb-use-emergency-backup.html to create your bootable pendrive with Peppermint Linux - whichever is easy on you.

If it does not work, then PhotoRec, Test Disk but first try the above.

Welcome to Seven Forums datetimestamp.

To answer your initial query, yes initializing the drive will erase the data on it. I think your best, most promising solution will be one of the Linux distros as suggested, the freezing may help. With the clicking sound, "the click of death", Spinrite may not work since it is more geared to reallocating bad sectors and not mechanical failures.

Another suggestion if Windows can "see" the drive. Copy & Paste - in Windows Recovery Console
