A valid question.
Once when I tried to backup a new Windows 7 install on a new HDD, Paragon backup refused and advised that I
check and repair the disk with manufacturer's diagnostic/repair utility. Yes, the advise was very specific.
When I tried another backup program ShadowProtect Desktop it said that the disk has some non-fatal errors but finished the backup all the same.
I then ran SeaTools for DOS and it did find errors and a lot of the same error and fixed it. - at this point I don't remember what exactly was the error.
Once the errors were fixed, Paragon was able to backup successfully.
Based on this experience, I would advise the OP to run the disk manufacturer's utility and fix any errors. My presumption is that some disk errors may be beyond chkdsk's domain.
