HP SimplePass / Authentec SimplePass fingerprint reader
This procedure is only tested on an HP machine with:
-- Validity Sensor (WBF) (PID=0018) and
-- Authentec SimplePass software.
Other hardware sensors and software was included on various HP machines
** Uninstalling the hardware and software will erase existing passwords and configuration.
Modifying only the XML file without updating the hardware and software was not tested.
The fingerprint software and hardware on my HP DV6 worked fairly well with one nagging issue. The sensor light would continue to blink for a long time after reading an enrolled finger for the password of the task (login, application, website). Often it would continuously blink.
Authentec no longer supports SimplePass, other than self support of the July 2012 release. The website states that Authentec was acquired, but not much else. Furthermore it isn't clear if all of Authentec was acquired or if only the fingerprint portion of their business was sold off.
HP does offer an updated hardware driver and updated software for SimplePass. Unfortunately, the newer versions are not on the support pages specific to my machine. I eventually found the updates in a round about way, Google searches took me to a few sites which led me back to HP; I almost never use an unknown or third-party site for updates unless the machine is very old.
If you have extensively configured SimplePass with many passwords, applications, and websites
-- you could try making only the XML modification.
