I've got Hitachi (1TB), Seagate and Western Digital. They are all working OK. The Hitachi is about 4 years old.

I've used Maxor, Seagate, Hitachi, Western Digital and aside from a run of 2.5" mobile crashes I've yet to crash a 3.5" of any make. I look for the largest cache with the fastest speeds, with the exception of my new back up fav. the WD greens which idle down when not in demand and rev up when in use to save power.

This question will get a load of responses, just like all of the other "which brand is better" threads have. Seagate 7200.11 drives had a strange firmware problem that scared people away for awhile, but the 7200.9, 7200.10, 7200.12's were all great drives. The 7200.14's, the new line of drives, are looking pretty awesome as well(I have 2-2TB models). Western Digital have almost always been high quality, but even they have had bad batches here and there. And as far as I know, Seagate bought out the Samsung HDD line.
Also, I'm not sold on the whole "Green" line of drives because I don't believe they do save much, if anything. I recently performed a zero write test, and a long duration sequential read test on my new 2TB 7200.14 drive. At the same time my friend was running the same tests on a 2TB green drive he just got in for a friends HTPC build. My Full Erase/Zero Write elapsed time was 3hrs 34 minutes, and my Long Read time was 3hrs 28 minutes. The exact same tests on the Green drive took 6hrs 0 min, and 5hrs 58 min. The specs on these drives are identical....SATA III, 64MB Cache, 2TB capacity.......the only difference is mine is a 7200 rpm drive and the green drive is...well, slower. Does a drive that takes twice as long to perform a task actually save anything?
I recommend either the Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 or the Western Digital Black drives.......and of course any of the enterprise drives from these companies.

i have a 2T Hitachi touro Desk Pro external drive and it is NOT compatible with windows 8.
it is a known issue but nothing has being done about it as yet.
this may have some reflection on the price .
i saw a Lacie 3T from the BT shop for £99 and thought that was pretty good.
USB 3 also.

I used to use WDs all the time, then last year, I had three WDs fail in only a few months, and one was less than a year old. I've replaced them with Seagates and had no problems since. I agree with the "green" stuff -- it's just a way to guilt you into buying their products.

If you ask six Geeks this question you will get six answers. I use Seagate. Over the last 15 years I have had 3 fail, one was out of warranty and got thrown out and 2 got replaced. Of more importance is the power supply. If you have a good reliable power supply you will have a long lived hard drive (all things considered). I use Enermax but Corsair and Silverstone are good. So there is more to hard drives reliability than meets the eye.
