Windows 7: Replace Intel Celeron 440 @ 2.0 GHz With Intel Core 2 Quad @ 3.0 GHz

Replace Intel Celeron 440 @ 2.0 GHz With Intel Core 2 Quad @ 3.0 GHz

I have this: ARK | Intel® Celeron® Processor 440 (512K Cache, 2.00 GHz, 800 MHz FSB)

I want to replace it with this: ARK | Intel® Core

I've tried simply physically replacing one with the other, but as you may guess, it's not that simple. What do I need to do? I'm on a budget of zero.

Could I get by with installation instructions, and perhaps directions towards drivers? I'm open to suggestions.

Thanks in advance!

I would suggest checking if your motherboard can support a more modern CPU. The Core 2 Quad is from 2008. You can probably get an i3 for close to the same price if your motherboard supports it.

I actually happen to have the processor I want to put in. I found it in a non-functioning computer, and I was hoping to use it as an upgrade. I'm currently looking into motherboard specifications though, and here's what I've come up with.

My motherboard is a 945GCT-M3 V1.12E, 5/9/2008, if I'm not mistaken. I'm checking into compatability now.

After you check for CPU compatibility check your BIOS version no that it's there for the new CPU, otherwise you'll have to flash it.

I can't seem to find any compatability information relating the two. That's not to say that the information I've found leads to the conclusion that my goal is an impossibility. But Intels site doesn't have very conducive resources for finding out the necessary information required in order to attain my goal.

What I lack is this: Motherboard compatibility information that would suggest the ability to replace my old Intel Celeron 440 2.00 GHz with the Intel Core 2 Quad Q9650 3.00 GHz.

I'm of course looking into it as best I can, but I've turned up nothing so far on that particular quandry.

Those 2 cpu`s are different LGA`s they will not fit in the same board.

You can`t just slap a cpu on your motherboard and hope it works. First it has to be the correct LGA ( land grid array ) that`s the pin layout, and you want to match the highest rated FSB ( front side bus ) your lga is probably a 775.

For example, my Compaq Presario SR5050NX came stock with a Pentium D 925 with a 800 MHz FSB. I went to the support webpage and found the specs and it also lists cpu upgrades. A lot of sites don`t tell you this. The fastest cpu I could put in it was the Core 2 Duo E6x00 series, the fastest being 3.33 GHz with a 1066 FSB. I managed to get a E6600 2.4 GHz off ebay for $25 and the thing flies.

Don`t worry about drivers with a cpu, you just install it and when you turn on the pc, windows will install any drivers for it.

There are tons of videos on youtube showing how to replace ( upgrade ) a cpu. Be EXTREMELY careful !!!!!

A Celeron is a rejected pentium and the bottom of the barrel

The QX9650 has a fsb of 1333 MHz. They go for $170 to $250 on ebay.

This is a list of cpu`s that should work, if this is your exact board.

It looks like 1066 is your fastest FSB, anything above that may not work and is a waste because it will just clock down to 1066.

The X6800 would be a major improvement.

And here ya go. Good Luck

But you should just go with a Core 2 Duo E6700 @ 2.66 GHz

Here are the specs, and of course it doesn`t show a list of cpu upgrades.
