windows 7 bsod with 4gb memory

Hello i have a strange issue .my rig was AMD Athlon X2 4850e,4 gb crucial (2x 2gb) picopsu 120w on windows 7 x64.all was ok until i upgraded the cpu toAMD Athlon II X2 250 AM3 now it will only work with 2gb i have tried in in different slots ,still no joy.it will work with 4gb with AMD Athlon X2 4850e.but only 2 gb with new AMD Athlon II X2 250 AM3 cpu. i have updated the bios, fresh install will not complete with 4 gb & AMD Athlon II X2 250 AM3 cpu. but runs like a dream with 4 gb & AMD Athlon X2 4850e cpu.so some how a combination with new amd cpu (AMD Athlon II X2 250 ) & 4gb will not run and crashes . But the old cpu( amd x2 4850E) is fine with 4gb!

    old rig
    AMD Athlon X2 4850e 45w
    jetway JNC81-LF AM2+ AMD780G Mainboard(latest bios)
    pico psu 120
lg slim (laptop )blu ray drive
western digital 2.5" 250 gb sata hdd
    2 x 2gb crucial ddr800mhz sodimm
    windows 7 rc 7100 x64
    no issues what so ever
    new rig
    AMD Athlon II X2 250 65w
    jetway JNC81-LF AM2+ AMD780G Mainboard(latest bios)
    pico psu 120
lg slim (laptop )blu ray drive
western digital 2.5" 250 gb sata hdd
    2 x 2gb crucial ddr800mhz sodimm
    windows 7 rc 7100 x64
crashes with 4 gb, ok with 2gb alternating slots makes no difference
it only runs with 1 slot filled!
    have tried 3 gb 1x 2gb &1 x1gb sodimm, still crashes!
    Help i am going crazy

Try the NEW AMD install with a slow burned 4x DVD with only 2gb on the MB.

Wait for everything to be running good & getting windows updates, before you add the extra ram memory. Looks like another Trial & Error testings session !

Just a thought but a quick looks at the specs for you PSU indicates that it may not handle the load.

Can I ask a question ? with this "picopsu 120w" does this mean you are running the machine with 120 watt power supply?? I know I'm a bit old fashion but with everything you have listed and seeing the mobo has so much on it I would try to get my hands on a 250watt power supply just to see how that works out, I might be out there and lost but it just sounds under powered.

    ken9122 & DarkXeno,

Nice catch on the PSU, I over looked that detail

so adding 1 more memory means the psu cannot cope remember this is a MINI ITX RIG .mobo draws 10 to 20w including memory cpu 65w max! harddrive(laptop) 5w dvdrom(laptop)5w i will try another psu it is just strange as it is working now for 4days & nights with no issue with just 1 memory
HOW MUCH POWER DOES A DDR2 SODIMM 800 need to RUN? Because it is running ok with no freezing no bsod with 1 memory module. so by you comment adding the second chip then psu cannot handle the second memory module with the 65w cpu combination but the old cpu could. with 2 ddr2 memory i can go into cemos(bios) ,it will post but not load windows. so i have to get a single 4 gb ddr2 sodimm. as a single memory module works fine.pico can provide 150w for a short period.
by my caculation max power drain is 85w for my rig. there is a power simulator for mini-itx mobo's
    http://www.epiacenter.com/powersim/p...mulator_v2.htm

I used sempron mobile 35watts then added 35watts as my new cpu is 65wats old one was 45 wats
i also used old p4 1.8 which is about 60watts and still cames way under 80watts when playing dvd.surely if power was the issue then when i plug in an external bus supplied usb harddrive (2.5 laptop) which drains more power than a memory stick, the pc should freeze or reboot.but it is fine with just 1 stick!

The site you have given us bases everything on mobile chips and boards, which you are not using those boards will not have the ATI 3200hd video card and your chip is an Athlon II not a mobile Sempron which the power converter page uses totally different power consumptions on each chip second your chip is a dual core Semprons where single core. Also 64 bit takes a bit more juice due to extra memory items run threw the code which means more power used from power supply, I know Doc wrote up an article somewhere around here the difference of 32bit and 64bit and how it uses memory which could be the reason you are having issues when you plug a second memory stick in. If you can get your hands on a single 4 gig stick to test and see if its stable with one then you will know if its a problem with using both memory slots at the same time with the power supply.

thanks, that makes sense. I have found on ocz 4gb memory chip so will try that.could be the low voltage 3v used by memory & cpu rail is the struggling as 5volts rail is ok when i plug in external bus powered devices.thank you.off to spend more money on memory before the other half comes in.will log the outcome later Once again thank you

Ouch that sucks on the price and the answer from them. I wounder how when they first released the board they didn't test it in that config? You would think a company would've tested it with two sticks of ram and also try to max the board out before oking it to be mass produced??
Well its good to hear you got an answer on this one.
