Don't get too concerned about this. You've got to be able to use your USB ports, otherwise it's just a broken computer, and I doubt that is the case.

Loose: is when if you drum on the desk with both hands the connector falls out on it's own.
Aged: is when the connector goes in and out without much effort at all (but it still works!)
Tight: is when it is new. And like other things we could think of, that does not last long.

I thought of the USB hub idea which is good except for one thing, it has a usb plug that has to be pushed into one of my laptop's ports therefore making it go soft
Well mate you have got to use the port anyway and with the hub it is a one install job the hub ports then take over the work.
I don't see any other way out of it unless you just don't use the USB ports in the machine - by the way is that port the only port or just one of say two or three that is wonky because I would be extremely surprised if the machine only had one port??

I have seen USB plugs that terminate in a socket - a bit like an extension piece but cannot for the life of me think of what they are called.
