New Sony Vaio laptop won't play Blu-Ray discs...

    System: Sony Vaio VGN-FZ21Z
    O/S: Windows 7 Home Premium

Hi there all, I know this will sound dumb but I haven't got a clue when it comes to setting up playing blu-ray discs on laptops.

A friend of mine has a Sony Vaio with full HD that they bought recently and we cannot get it to play blu-ray discs.

I've had a look online and all I've seen is people saying there is no software preinstalled on Windows 7 to play Blu-Ray discs, can anyone recommend any free software or help us as to why it's not working please?

I'd just like to add that the laptop has got a blu ray disc drive. (UJ-220)

    Thanks

    BurnAware Free 6.1 Download - Freeware Files.com - Audio & Video Category

The setup program includes a toolbar which does not have to be installed to use the software.

This link should explain why they don't play out of the box:

You will need a program like PowerDVD or WinDVD to play the blu-ray. I believe those programs cost money but I'm sure there are some free options out there.

According to the specs for the Windows 7 model, Corel WinDVD BD is supplied installed by the Sony manufacturer. And the software ought to play most of the BD's out of the box, except for the most recent vintage, perhaps, that require recent authentification/protecton algorithms. The original installed program was from June of 2012. Maybe a few components of WindDVD BD need to be updated.

Slip-streamed clean install? Maybe obsessive-compulsively removed programs that protect the BD operation?

Hi, the laptop originally came with Vista so we formatted the laptop and installed a Windows 7 Home Premium.

Thanks for the suggestions all, I have spoken to my friend on the phone and given him some to try but unfortunately he's not really getting any where yet.

First off has it played BDs before?
Normal drives wont play BluRay so I just wanna be sure that you even have an actual BD player first.

Is it showing up in Device Manager?

Hi there thank you for your reply, I have sent the download links to him but unfortunately he keeps getting this message: "you must have the previous WinDVD installed" and it won't let him go any further.

Do you know how we can get the previous version than the one in the above link that you kindly supplied?

    I appreciate everyones help BTW.

    Download the Original Utilities Package

IMPORTANT NOTE: The package you are about to download contains the utilities that originaly come preinstalled on your unit.
These utilities are automatically reinstalled on your computer if you perform a system recovery.
(For more information about how to recover your VAIO to its original state, please click here. )
Furthermore, on most VAIO computers, these utilities can be found on your Hard Disk Drive in the following folder: C:\Utils or on your Recovery CD.
The utilities included in this package are not updated versions.
If updated versions of the preinstalled utilities are available for your model, they can be found separately in the Drivers and Updates section of the VAIO web site or via VAIO Update if your computer has this functionality.
Thus, if you are still using the preinstalled Operating System and didn"t delete the C:\Utils folder (for recent models) or still have your Recovery CD"s (for older models), you do not need to download this package.

Then apply the Windows 7 fixes.
