You wouldn't be typing up a novel...just a few lines. I have a spreadsheet in my SkyDrive account where I keep hardware list of all of my computers, and those of family and friends I support. It takes about 2 minutes to fill out a section for one of the computers. Most of those software apps just read drivers, which can be less-than-descriptive. That's why I recommend knowing the hardware off hand, or knowing how to find it accurately.
I know several people in real life who are much better off just having software that does it for them. I can talk to them all day about how much easier it is to know your computer and to open it up and look, but they will still be absolutely unwilling to do it. They have other things in their lives that are significantly more important than their computer, so they'd prefer the ability to just have some software that they can use during the 20-30 minutes that they use their computer each day.

HWiNFO is so good that it's even telling me the make and model of my memory. CPU-Z does the same thing, but HWiNFO is telling me the make and model of everything. It also has the ability to save it all to a file.

Some people may be like my wifey too. She'd not know where to begin taking a cover off. But on the OP's side, he has to first discover what he has. I only have 3 machines so it's fairly easy for me to keep the info in my head, knock on wood.

Yeah, not everyone is like I am. I know every last detail about my system because I built it and I love it. I'm the same way with my drumset. That's just how I am though. I've met some absolutely amazing local drummers who are far better than many famous drummers (hey, it's not easy to make it big even if you're good), and when I ask them what their drumset consists of concerning the drums, heads and cymbals, some of them don't even know! It's not due to renting their equipment (many professionals have to rent on occasion), but it's just that they have a personality type where those details aren't important enough to remember. All they care about is making music.

So, I feel that some people are the same with their computers: it's more important to them to use their computer than to know what the system consists of. So when they want to know what it consists of (or if someone else wants to know), they're naturally going to seek an easy way to get that information. Fortunately, we have some software applications that do a very good job of getting almost all of that information very accurately. As I discovered today, HWiNFO is one of them.

Or how about some people with the car that they own? Have you ever met someone who doesn't know very much about their car, almost like it's a rental or something? I mean, I think that this is just one of those things and that's fine.

I think it is the norm for PC users not to know how it works or why. there was an OP here who was afraid to reboot because it might break something. the fact that you and I and a few dozen others are here, shows we are more concerned about the guts and wherefores of PCs.

code though, I have very little understanding of, but I can still build a PC. Most of the time they work fine.

tinker123 you have gotten some great methods to get done what you asked for. You just have to choose one that fit your needs. I do have another one that many of us use.

Speccy - System Information - Free Download

Let us know what you choose if you can.
