My desktop has a Gigabyte 880GA-UD3H motherboard, which has two USB 3.0 ports and two USB 2.0 ports. Earlier today they were all working fine, after installing a windows update and rebooting, suddenly the 2.0 ports no longer work. Plugging in a device still gives the device power (my USB mouse flashes ever 3 seconds or so), but no response when the device is plugged in. In device manager all "USB Root Hub" tabs remain unchanged when I plug anything into the 2.0 ports.
Found a couple older forum threads which described a similar problem after a windows update, but the solution didn't seem to apply in this case. I tried running the utilities found at 6.1.7601 USB Driver Update Fix Binary files in some USB drivers are not updated after you install Windows 7 SP1 or Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1
but whatever they were checking for (Usbport.sys, Usbehci.sys, and Winusb.sys files) were all fine.
Any ideas? I wish I could get by with the remaining 2 ports but alas, I use a USB mouse, keyboard, and wireless card (by necessity, not choice).
