Help with 2nd internal SATA HD Installation

    Hi,

I have a Windows 7 Ultimate x64 machine. I recently installed a new internal HD through SATA, but Windows isn't recognizing it. It also doesn't let me initialize it due to I/O device error. I know the HD is good. if I boot from a Windows installation CD, I can see it, and I can install another OS on it no problem. Also, this is a 250GB HD that was previously used in a XP machine. One more thing, it is detected in Disk Manager, but it has a wrong size (465.66G) displayed on it. My MOBO's setting was AHCI from the very beginning.

Can someone please tell me what I need to troubleshoot this? Thank you.

Can you see it in your BIOS as the proper size? You also may want to make sure it is formatted as NTFS.

Yes, BIOS shows the correct size. In terms of the format type, that's part of the dilemma. I can't gain access to the HD to do anything to it. I even tried Paragon Hard Disk Manager with no luck.

Can you view the hard drive in Diskpart ? Click on type CMD in the search programs and files back right disk on CMD and choose Run as administrator .

       Note
Command prompt should up with this path C:\Windows\System32>_

    Type

       Note
    Press [ENTER] after each command

    Code:
    Diskpart
    List disk
    You should see

    Disk 0

    Disk 1

It just says unallocated, which is what happens when the disk can't be initialized, so it doesn't say its file type.

Right click on it and try to format it as NTFS.

It's not an option.... That's not possible without the disk being initialized first.
