    Power port Not Working

    Hello,
i have a HP pavilion G42 laptop running on windows 7. Few days back, my battery stopped taking charge. I checked my battery with another laptop, it took charge as usual. So i got to know i didn't have problems with my battery. I checked my charger and it was working fine too(with another laptop). When i took my laptop to a HP authorized servicing center, they said the power port of my laptop was damaged and that they needed to replace the whole motherboard for that. As it is a costly option, I would like to know that is there any other solution to my problem? Can only the power port be replaced/repaired and not the whole motherboard?

    Thank You.

That is not a practical repair. The cost of the parts and labor would approach the cost of the motherboard.

IF you could do the repair yourself (must have soldering proficiency and tools)

and IF you could get your hands on a motherboard circuit map

and IF you had the testing equipment (to test where on the circuit the failure occurs - the port is only the beginning of the circuit)

and IF the failure occurs in a replaceable component (it does not need to be just the port - it could be the voltage regulating chip, the power source switching relay, or anything in between)

and IF you could get the replacement component (almost never comes from the laptop or even the motherboard manufacturer - usually some 3rd party electronics firm)

THEN you might be able to make the repair economically.

A cool way to reply sir :)
In that case, could you guide me about what can be a reasonable price for a new motherboard (Since i am a noob,i don't want to get cheated!) ?

Well I don't know how much HP would charge for a replacement, but you would want to contact them to find out anyway. What you are really looking for in that phone call is the model number of the exact replacement motherboard for the Pavillion G42 series laptop you have (so you can shop for it online). The number should be something like 595184-001.

A quick google search shows some motherboards for that model starting at $93 US plus shipping. Which seems about right.

If HP will sell a replacement for about that price (stop laughing!) then it would be nice to get it from them, but otherwise look for a parts retailer that specializes in laptop parts. Someplace like EBay would work, but you must put in the due diligence to check out the retailer for reputation in the reviews.

The only thing to do is start shopping.
