USB Thumb drive not working properly

I recently bought a 64Gb USB thumb drive. I copied files on to it, but when I tried to access them afterwards I found only empty folders on the drive. I tried it on a different computer, and it works fine.

The IT guys at work have never heard of such a thing.

My home computer runs Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 (64 bit). The other computers I tried run Win7 Professional 64 bit

Any ideas or help with this would be much appreciated

    Hi MackTheKnife,

    Welcome onboard.

I am just shooting in the dark. :)

Click on Start type cmd in the Search field and press Enter

Click on cmd.exe to open the Command Window.

    Enter this command.

    attrib -h -r -s /s /d g:\*.* (replace g with the actual pen drive letter)

(You can copy and paste the above command but remember to put in the correct drive letter.)

    Now press "Enter".

Now check for your files in your pen drive.

    Good Luck.

    Hi Jumanji

Thanks for your suggestion. I'm not sure what that command was meant to do, I pasted it into a DOS command line as you suggested. It ran for quite a few minutes and then just went back to the prompt without displaying anything, and I see no change on the thumb drive. The files I copied from home are still not there, and the files I copied from work are there.
I tried the command both at home and at work.

hmmm..... that command only unhides all files if those are hidden. And it looks like you have nothing hidden.

Are you sure you bought a genuine 64GB pendrive and not a cheapie fake pendrive?

It is preferred to copy all the files in your pen drive elsewhere, format it and then run it to write and verify. Read the Readme file.

    Hi
I ran the USB tester that you recommended, and here are the results:

Warning: Only 63992 of 63993 MByte tested.
The media is likely to be defective.
    7.6 GByte OK (16108992 sectors)
54.8 GByte DATA LOST (114946624 sectors)
    Details:0 KByte overwritten (0 sectors)
    0 KByte slightly changed (< 8 bit/sector, 0 sectors)
    54.8 GByte corrupted (114946624 sectors)
0 KByte aliased memory (0 sectors)
    First error at offset: 0x00000001eb9b8000
    Expected: 0x00000001eb9b8000
    Found: 0x0000000000000000
    H2testw version 1.3
    Writing speed: 12.9 MByte/s
    Reading speed: 9.19 MByte/s
    H2testw v1.4

I ran this on 2 different computers, to be certain. I'm guessing this means that it is a fake and the actual capacity is 7Gb not 64

Without doubt it is a fake pen drive. Please return it to the vendor and get the refund. Buy genuine branded pen drive from a reputable vendor.

You may mark the thread as solved.

    You are welcome.

Note: I would not trust even that 8GB, for all fake pen drives are made with manufacturer-rejected components.

Thanks for the advice. I bought it on eBay from a Chinese guy who now won't even respond to my email.I guess I can just chalk it up as a lesson to myself
You've been very responsive and helpful and I thank you for taking the time.
