A question about a usb number pad on a laptop

I have a usb number pad on my Gateway md2614u laptop, os Windows 7 home 32 bit. Normally in a chat prog, a text prog (like word) if you type " alt + 0176" you get the degree sign. Why won't it work with the usb number pad?

What make and model of "a number pad"? Does it even have an alt key?

There is no make or model on the number pad. And no alt key

Do you have a NUMLOCK key?

No ALT key? That would make it kind of tough to enter (Alt + 0176) then wouldn't it?

Each HID (Human Interface Device) has its own driver so you can't "merge" input from other devices to create a single keyboard entry.

Yes on the number lock key. I can't find the exact Ebay sale that I got the number pad from but this Ebay sale number 400465658151 is a very close second from looking at the picture.

I have a Gateway laptop model 2614u. Os Windows 7 home 32bit. How do I enter a Windows ascii code on a laptop with no built in number keypad? I tried using a generic usb keypad that doesn't have an ALT key. I can't enter the ascii number using the laptop ALT key plus the usb keypad.

I finely stumbled on how to punch in the ascii code using the generic usb number pad. You do it the same way as if the laptop had a built in number pad on the internal keyboard.

How does it work Steve? You had said it didn't work with the ALT key?
