    removing one of the RAMs

    Hi all,

There are two RAMs in a PC. One of them is 1GB and another is 2GB. I want to remove that 2GB by opening the PC (case) and simply bring it out from its slot on the motherboard. Is it possible? And will not my OS and other components get damages?

    Thanks.

No, just push down the retaining clips and take it out, take your time and be careful. Make sure you unplug the power and drain the electricity by holding down the power button for a few seconds before you start.

Also, touch metal before you begin, (the case should be metallic) to discharge any static electricity you might be carrying.

The RAM can be wrapped in a piece of paper for safe short-time transport, but an anti-static bag would be better.

Best to get one of these for playing with hardware:

    Rosewill RTK-002 Network/ PC Service Tools - Newegg.com

But as long as you hold the RAM by the edges and take it out when it's off/unplugged power cable, and ground yourself to the case after NOT running laps on your carpeted floors after rubbing balloons on your t-shirt and pressing them on your cat, then you will probably be fine removing the RAM stick.

You generally want to use 2 sticks of the exact same specifications these days if wondering that as well.
Dual channel is pretty standard these days but requires 2 sticks in use and identical or you won't actually get the gains of dual channel architecture vs. single.

    See this:

Windows 7 will not run very well with only 1GB of RAM.
Are you removing the 2GB to put in a larger stick?

No. This was a request from my friend. He asked me to remove one of the RAMs, but I was not sure is it simple or can cause damages to the PC.

As long as you follow the anti-static recommendations the other folks posted you will not damage the PC.
