Alternative I would get a USB headphone/mic combo or a standalone USB mic, I have both.
The only bad thing, with a USB mic, if you use listen to the device: there is a short delay, it's a feature changed since Vista.

So basically I should just pick up a USB headset if I don't want to use the laptop's built in mic?
I'm sorry, but unless someone here has some experience with your laptop's audio hardware (not the mic, the laptop components that work with audio) you would need to ask Dell customer support.
The only other option is finding a usb sound card or a usb headset, either has its own audio hardware and will work regardless of the laptop.
Okay thank you all for your time and assistance I really appreciate it. Could you recommend any USB headsets with a mic? Nothing fancy or for hardcore users, just something not too expensive and fairly simple.
