ASMedia Controller?

Hi guys
I'm looking at getting an Asus z87 Pro mobo for my first build. I see that there are 2 SATA ports on the mobo that are controlled by the AS Media Controller.
What does this mean? What does it do?
Thanks guys

It enables the CPU to communicate with the hard-drive.

The main chip set (Intel Z87) has 6 SATA ports and ASUS added an addition 2 SATA ports using an AS Media chip.

Does it perform better than the standard data ports?

The Intel ports will almost always perform better than an add on controller. The Native chipset controllers are always best.

Also, you usually can't boot from add-on controllers.

To add to what the others have said, AsMedia is a third party company that provides storage chipsets for added flexibility on motherboards. The Intel based SATA ports are what you need to use first, but the Asmedia ports would be fine for a storage hard drive IF you need to use it. 6 native SATA III ports should be enough for most people though.

Sadly, I'm not most people. I'm using (or have allocated for future use) eleven SATA III and one SATA II ports.

The more ports the merrier as long as they are USB v3.0 and SATA III/6.0 compatible, I say!

Mine has 7 SATA, one is ON the PCB, and it's the one that is not in use, but never really thought about what's handling it until now, seems pretty weak to be just one added port.

New revisions are on the way though!

I'm getting old, I want my 32 core CPUs and 256-bit OS! HELP!!!!
