Win7 only performs partial boot

I noticed this morning that my computer has been running for 37 days without a restart, so naturally I decided it should be restarted to clean out temp files. The initial restart acted strangely, taking almost 15 minutes. When it was finished, the computer had only partially rebooted, failing to start many programs and offering me Code 10s on my wireless adapter and audio. In addition, the computer set itself back to windows basic, telling me my video card doesn't support Aero (even though I've been running it for years). Screensaver also tells me that there is no compatible device, though device manager says it's working fine.

After several more restarts, the exact same thing happens. I went to do a system restore, only to find that all of my restore points are gone as well. I haven't a clue where to start with this.

You might try going into safe mode and checking for malware or viruses. Also, there's a known issue that WU IE10 turns off Aero for some. You could also try a repair install.

The best advice I can give you is useless at this point in time: Get yourself a good imaging program (many are free) and regularly create images of your important partitions. I can't tell you how many times this has saved my bacon. Nothing is a problem if you have a recent image to restore.

For even more protection, keep an external drive that you can copy these images to so that you can store a copy offsite. In addition to having 3 rotating images of my system and data partitions on site at all times, I also keep an HD with copies in my SD box.

This may help with your code 10 errors:

CMD 'batch file' no longer performs in Win7 Ultimate (32bit)
For over a year, double clicking 'file.cmd' would trigger the correct response. Now, a double-click merely opens it in a text editor. When I try to change the file association, I find that "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" is greyed out, with an indelible/irremovable tick...

Master Boot Record (or partial) on seperate HDD
Ok, so three months ago a customer contacted us saying that her emachine was freezing. A technician evaluated the machine and concluded via process of elimination (minus an actual HDD test) that the freezing was due to HDD failure, as it was the only thing left. The customer didn't want to pay us...
