Main hard drive suddenly full after running chkdsk (400-500 GB lost)

    Hi,

I have weird recurring problem with my laptop. After running chkdsk (which takes couple of hours) my hard drive becomes suddenly full. Normally I have about 150 - 200 GB of data on my laptop, after mentioned procedure, suddenly I have no space left as (according to My Computer space indicator). It happened to me before, full system recovery did the trick, but I would prefer to avoid it. I'm running windows 7 premium 64 bit on my Lenovo y580. I've tried exploring my disc with programs like treesize, but it shows that I have only 200GB in use... Another thing to mention that might help a bit is that during chkdsk /b, there was a huge number (100 million -ish) of sectors moved to bad cluster file (or something similar). Any advices? Many thanks for help!

Both CHKDSK taking a long time and identification of lots of bad sections are clear indication of a failing drive.

The sooner you get stuff off this drive and onto another new drive, the better.

Ditto what mark said and have you tried any scans on the HDD? If you can try the Seatools tool and the surface test with Partition Wizard the latter yo can make a bootable disk to use it.

    SeaTools for Windows | Seagate

Is your system partition lost? Is your computer unable to start? Choose Bootable CD to help you. or you can just use the PW download to the drive and use the surface test from it.
