There are a couple of things that Windows does in the background:
Search and install updates,
Index documents for search,
Prefetch frequently used files,
Defragment the hard drive.
It's the "Indexing Service"/"Windows Search" services which are responsible for this process to run apparently. I'll try disabling them. "Windows Search" is a necessity at times right enough.
I have a new computer plus a couple of other computers and I have some external hard drives and flash drives. what is the best way to check these devices to make sure they are clean, will just connecting them and viewing them or running AV and other security checks propose a risk to the computer...

The original one had Windows Vista on it along with my apps, programs, etc.
I clean installed Windows 7 on a second drive that had nothing on it.
They don't seem to recognize each other and I can only change which one boots through F8 and the BIOS settings.

I have a slight issue that I'm not sure how to fix. It's nothing serious but it's something I'd like to take care of.
