    Working an old CPU

Have just finished off an old XP but I do notice that CPU usage jumps to 100% on a scan ie MBAM
Currently a Celeron @ 2.6 Ghz (listed as a Northwood) no numbers to speak of.

Now the cache is a miserable 128KB and I have a stack of Pentiums @ 2.4 - 8 with L2 512 and the same same front bus speed.

Anyone had any experience swapping these old timers out and if so is this going to damage the machine?. As far as I can tell the voltages for these are all the same.

the best ref I can find is this Intel Celeron (Northwood) microprocessor family for the curent one in use.

My understanding is that if the socket is the same the chips are compatible and interchangeable.

The problem is that if the motherboard BIOS does not support that particular processor then it won't run it. Nothing will happen, including boot.

But I do not think it would damage the board electrically.
