I got the impression Microsoft was in control. Now you say you manually downloaded and installed the driver? In any case, if it's new I don't trust it. I'd back off to the old. If that works, then try the new one. If the newest driver breaks it, get rid of it and go back to what works.
I don't know how many times I've seen people jump onto the latest and greatest driver only to find stuff is broken as soon as it's installed. I wait a few weeks and watch for complaints.
