I equipped all my 6 PCs with SSDs - also my 2 old laptops from 2007. The speed difference is very noticeable.
With an older PC it is not necessary to go for a leading edge SSD which costs more than some older model. Any SSD from a reputable company will do in that case. I always bought my SSDs by price - looking for the cheapest.
And I also agree that on a desktop where you keep the HDD for storing the data, a 64GB SSD would suffice for the OS - unless you need the extra space e.g. for running virtual partitions.
