No matter how old the computer, I recommend never skimp on power supplies, they are the life blood of the whole system and can be used if/when you build a new system. I always recommend Seasonic, Corsair, Antec or XFX.
what are the specs of your system? is it the one in your specs below? if it is this should be fine and its 80 plus bronze to boot. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817139050 whats your budget? as essenbe said never skimp on the psu you get what you pay for, my hx620w cost me about 150 and is still kicking 6 years later.
You can use this power supply calculator as well but I would round up some and know that a larger power supply will run cooler. As mentioned please purchase quality and look to a semi modular design to have the best of both worlds. Seasonic brand if budget will allow, also Corsair, Thermaltake, Antec, XFX and EVGA.

Thanks for the info guys. I've found that the Corsair 430CX fits the bill and isn't ridiculously priced at £35. What do you think?
I just tried the calculator now and it said that I would use 251w of power and it recommended the CX 430!
Perfect and I like to take that suggestion and add about 25% so your good. That allows for some expansion and every year the PSU will degrade 2-4% of it's output !
Brilliant. Thanks for all the help, going to order that PSU tomorrow.
I've got good news and bad news: the good news is that most of my PC survived the power surge. I was expecting my motherboard to be dead but I was pleasantly surprised that the PC booted up.
The bad news is that my graphics card is dead. Apart from the power supply, this was the only thing to get damaged so I got off lucky. It's an old Nvidia GeForce 7800 GTX (256mb). I've currently got a 7600 GS in but it's giving me BSOD's so I'm looking to pick up a new cheap graphics card.
I've done a bit of searching and I've found that the GeForce 210 1GB seems to get good reviews and it's only £20. Will this be better than my old 7800 GTX?
