Windows 7: Another 'best budget laptop' thread

If I were buying a serious laptop, I would look for one with the following:

Intel Core i5 4th generation CPU(Haswell) with HD4600 graphics

8GB of RAM @ 1600MHz(notice I said 8, not 6 or whatever oddball crap they are pushing now)

500GB+ HDD--Not really important as you are going to remove it in favor of an SSD and use it for external storage. I would get at least a 256GB SSD later to replace the HDD

1080p display--I hate that stupid 1366 resolution they are forcing on us these days.

Backlit keyboard.........this is personal preference, but a laptop with a backlit keyboard is the cat's ass!

That is what I personally would get if I needed a serious laptop to do actual work on.

Also forgot to add that it would need to be manageable in terms of size. With an SSD, a power efficient Haswell CPU and pretty damn nice on chip graphics, it wouldn't run very hot and wouldn't have to be huge.

Kelly, the size of the SSD depends very much how you are using the laptop. E.g. my wife has 2 laptops (at 2 different locations) that run with 60GB SSDs. She keeps all her files on a 32GB stick. That makes it easier to transport the files between locations. The laptops are never moved.

The backlit keyboard is an excellent idea. My Toshiba laptop has it and on my desktops I use a Logitech backlit keyboard. With my poor vision I could not do without.

Here is a really good deal if you like a SSHD - but you have to hurry.

Hi there.

@WHS -- Good laptop BUT : another one of those 768 X 1366 native resolutions --- If my SAMSUNG S4 Phone has a full 1080p resolution why shouldn't a 14 inch laptop have one - the screen is MUCH larger than my phone --even on a phone I can see the difference between the full 1080p on a Samsung S4 and the lower screen resolution of the still excellent Samsung S3 phone.

Those with Iphones probably like decent screen resolution too.

OK These laptops have HDMI out but why should you have to rely on an external monitor for a decent screen resolution. Even on a 14 inch screen you WILL notice a difference between full HD and the older 768 X 1366 even if your eyes aren't 20/20 vision. In fact poorer eyesight makes the higher resolution MORE worthwhile.

Cheers

I see your point. But at this price you cannot expect every component to be perfect. A touchscreen Ultrabook with an i5 that has a 4000 graphics chip, a SSHD which seems to perform very well (as to the user review) and all of that for $480.

Not long ago those Ultrbooks were $1000 and more - and ASUS is a good company.

If it had a backlit keyboard, I would buy it. But without that it does not work for me.

If it were a regular laptop, I would just get a 120/128GB SSD......since this laptop would be used for some serious work, I'd rather have a 256GB drive just to make sure I never got low on space.

I guess it depends what you do. This may be the best and cheapest solution for him.
