lost photo folder on external hard drive

    Dear members-please can anyone help.
I was copying (backing-up) my digital photo collection by moving the files from an external hard drive onto a partition on the desktop PC.
Unfortunately, during the process, my computer failed (I think the CPU has gone).
At the point in which the computer packed-up, only a relatively few of the pics had been moved over.

Regrettably, afterwards, I checked the external hard drive and found the photo folder had disappeared completely.
Furthermore, the hard drive on the computer itself (to which I was moving the files) did not contain the photos .

I have tried windows disk check (checkdisk) but this does not help. I have set folder options to "view hidden folders" but this has not shown up a folder containing photos either.

Should anyone be able to assist I will be most grateful because as things stand I have lost several years of precious digital pics.

Were you Copying & Pasting them across from your external hard drive or were you Cutting & Pasting them. If you were Cutting & Pasting them then may have been lost, but if you were Copying & Pasting they should still be on your external drive.

Never move, always copy. Looks like they are lost unless you happen to have restore points on the external disk.

I always enable restore points on data partitions. Then one can always recover stuff from the restore points.

ShadowExplorer - Recover Lost Files and Folders

You can also try RECUVA. There is a small chance that might work.

    Download Recuva 1.49.1019 - FileHippo.com

    Dear all
Thank you all for your kind input
I was copying and pasting. After posting this query I did chkdisk and it retrieved the files concerned. In this regard, the files were placed by chkdisk into a folder called found000.
However the found folder is a system folder and the folder is hidden.
I have managed to "unhide it" but now have the problem that the access to them is denied due to "ownership" and "permissions" issues, which is a complete nightmare to me as I have no knowledge or understanding of this area of computing. Any further advice is to be appreciated

    Dear Sir

Thank you for this tip. I shall try it out. My folder contains many subfolders, and they in turn contain subfolders. There are many hundreds of photo files contained in there . Would I need to individually take ownership of every file/folder - if so it would take hours and hours to do.
    Best wishes

I think once you took ownership of the highest level folder, the subfolders should be accessible.
