Processor for 32-bit and 64-bit windows 7?

Hello,

I am soon installing Windows 7 on my laptop. For specs see my profile.

Now I am not sure if I should install Windows 7 32-bit or Windows 7 64-bit version.
Because after viewing the Experience Index from my system, and choose ->view and print details, i see this:

ManufacturerDell Inc. ModelInspiron 1720 Total amount of system memory4,00 GB RAM System type32-bit operating system Number of processor cores2 64-bit capableYes

As you can see, 64-bit capable Yes.

Does this mean that I can install Windows 7 x64 bit version?

I am currently running Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit.

I also like to know if someone here installed Windows 7 succesfully on the dell inspiron 1720.

Best regards,

Hello, your computer appears to be able to use a 64-bit Operating System, I do suggest running x64 on that particular system.

Probably yes. The MB is a 64 bit, albeit Dell choose to install only the 32 bit version of Vista/XP on the computer. If you are unsure go to Dell's web site and do a support search for you laptop that should tell you if yes or no. With 4 gigs of ram it looks as though Dell had a 64 bit OS in mine; a 32 bit OS will only use 3.3 gigs of the installed ram. Here is a web site that can give some more information. Good Luck.

Thank you for helping me!

The trouble is, Dell does not support windows 7 on my Dell inspiron 1720.
So they don't offer 32-bit or 64-bit windows 7 drivers to download for my hardware.

Maybe there is someone who has a Dell Inspiron 1720, and can guide me to make a wise choice? a 32-bit or 64-bit install of windows 7.

Thanks in advance!

Hi - just installed windows 7 64bit on my Inspiron 1720.

Backed everything up, formatted the HDD's and did a clean install (so everything is nice and neat!)

All working fine -infact it's noticably faster...

Only minor irritation is that the mousepads scroll up/across lines arent working at the moment - trying to find a driver to fix that problem, if you know where to get it let me know...

Hello Mcgill,

Thank you for sharing this information ;-)
Good to know that a x64 install works.

I have a question, can you please edit your system specs in your profile?

Maybe someone here can help you with the mouse-pad.

Or maybe this thread is the solution: Laptop Touchpad

Have a nice day!

I successfully installed Windows 7 Home Premium x64 on my Dell Inspiron 1720.

Everything seems to work out of the box, only had to install Nvidea driver.
Enabled Aero.

Experience Index 4.7, due to Aero and HDD.

Have a nice day!
