usb mouse not working - tried three different ones

I have a hp slimeline 5600 3ghz amd 3gb ram 500+gb hd with windows 7 x64 and cannot get any usb mouse to operate and i have tried 3 different ones and they work on other machines. the usb keyboard works fine so i have to navigate with the keyboard. i checked in device manager and the mouse is listed with an exclamation point and when i look at the description there it says something like "error code 19 the informatiion in the registry keys is missing or corrupted". i tried to do a restore but that didnot work. i am under the immpression usb is not included in system restore backups. please help, almost sounds like a reinstall issue. thanks in advance. also the mouse works in repair mode and when i out in any kind of live cd/dvd (did not make any changes with live cd/dvd)

Are the other machines where the mouse works running 32 bit Windows?

Have you tried a different USB port?

The only "trick" I know that sometimes works is to boot in safe mode, right click the Device Manager item with the yellow circle, and hit Delete. Reboot normally and see if the reinstall fixes it.

The other thought I have is that the keyboard may work because the input is only a fraction that the mouse is. But that's just a thought. It's sounding more like a hardware issue. But try the delete driver in safe mode gimmick. I have seen it work a bunch of times.

what would cause the mouse to work in repair mode or with a live cd?

That would make me believe you have a software issue, corrupt system file.

Try the sfc /scannow command, or a Repair install.

In limited mode fewer drivers are loaded. Less chance of conflict. If it's a differend OS on the live CD then it's a different driver. Try the delete and reboot trick. It works more often then not. It doesn't cost anything except a few minutes time.
