do a system restore to the day before the upgrade. this should let you regain control. make a new restore point after doing so and then try the upgrade again.

I always completely uninstall avast! before installing any upgrade to the program.

I am reluctant to trust the thoroughness of the cleaning done by any software in an upgrade.

A better description of what is going on would be very useful. The more information we have to work with, the better help we can give.

Does the keyboard work before Windows starts up? (can you get into the BIOS settings?)

Does Windows load? Do you get to the Desktop? (if no, then where does it stop loading?)

    OK try this:

    Start or restart the computer.
As soon as you see that first screen, and before Windows starts to load, press the F8 key repeatedly
This will bring up the Advanced Boot Options
Use the arrow key to select "Last Known Good Configuration" > and press ENTER.

Tell me if that clears it up.

    OK, try this then:

Do the same F8 procedure to get to the Advanced Boot Options again > only this time choose Safe Mode and press ENTER.

Let the system start up in Safe Mode > When it reaches the desktop then do this:

    • Start > Control Panel > Programs
    • then uninstall Avast
    • When it's finished then restart

    Notes:
These solutions are suggested based on your statement that you installed Avast and then the problems started: cause and effect. If you only think it was Avast then we could be chasing a red herring.

If you can't get the mouse or keyboard to work in Safe Mode then there may be a larger problem going on.
