    Upgrading bluray player

I've got the Lg BD 550 that I want to upgrade for 2 reasons: It isn't wifi and will not recognize videos on my comp when connected by USB flash drive.

This is the one that seems to accomplish those goals. LG BP620: 3D-Capable Blu-ray Disc? Player with SmartTV and Wireless Connectivity | LG USA

Anyone have experience with this model or any suggestions on a better choice.

I was considering going to a PS4, but that will not play bluray discs.

    Thanks,

    Paul

That's what Sony support just told me.

    I understand that PS4 does play blu-rays.

"In any case, we were effortlessly able to confirm top-notch, totally accurate, unadulterated playback of Blu-ray movies against several other known-good reference players. That’s a small advantage over the Xbox One’s very good Blu-ray playback, which has a small (but generally not noticeable) lightness inaccuracy in its output."

    Sony PS4 Performs Worse Than PS3 As A Blu-ray & DVD Player

In PS3, the star attraction is its Blu-ray player - I bought it only for that but I waited for the Slim and substantial price drop :) - and it will be hard to imagine that it will do away with Blu-ray playback in PS4.

    Yes, you're right.
I just called Sony tech support (again) and they said an update had recently been given for that.

What it won't do at least until April, is be able to play videos from a USB flash drive, which is one of my requirements(especially for that price.)

    Thanks for reply,

You're right about PS3 being better as a bluray player:

    From PC Advisor
    Quote:
    PS3 vs PS4: media playback

PS4 This may be the critical point. The PS3 is actually a better media player than is the PS4. Quite deliberately the PlayStation 4 is dedicated to gaming, whereas the PlayStation 3 remains our favourite Blu-ray player. To use the PS4 as a Blu-ray player you need to download additional software as out of the box it isn't licensed as such.

The same is true of one of the other key benefits of the PS3 - on the PS4 you can't play videos stored on memory sticks and external hard drives, or wirelessly stream files from other devices.

The PS3 seems to have what I want - Bluray disc playback and USB playback.

I have the LG BP620 and have had no issues with it. I haven't tried to play files via USB though. For "smart" blu ray players, I would look at the Samsung BD-F5900. You can install a free app on it called Plex that will allow you to use your computer or any storage attached to your computer as a server and you can stream files to it wirelessly over 2.4GHz or 5GHz, or an ethernet cable. You need Plex Media Server installed on your computer and it is very easy to use.....point Plex to where your media is stored and create a folder, TV Shows/Movies for example, and you can stream content via a very nice user interface and a free app.

If you want me to go into more detail just let me know, and I'd be happy to help. I use Plex to stream to 3 different rooms in my house and it is completely free and works very well.

    Hi Kelly,

I decided to get the PS3 - I'll download the Plex Media Server and if I have questions , I'll let you know.

    Thanks,

It is not necessary to install any third party streaming applications. You can set up your Windows 7 WMP12 to stream to your PS3.

Share media from my Media Player 12 using Windows 7 with my PS3 - Microsoft Community

Just google on that topic and you may find all necessary step by step instructions on doing it.

Do that when you actually get into the groove.

    Thanks,

    Both links look interesting.

I'll be receiving the PS3 in about a week and will let you both fight it out helping me.
