Keyboard not working properly, seems to be a problem within computer

EDIT:

I do feel stupid now, I had recently installed some software for automatically pressing keys, I just discovered that was running as a background process (I didn't see it previously), I've stopped it and everything is fine now.

------

please excuse the lack of grammar/punctuation in this post, my keyboard is not working properly;

all of a sudden my keyboard started to behave strangely. i was not doing anything unusual or different on my computer, it just suddenly stopped working correctly, so unfortunately i cant give you much diagnostic information, the only things I can comment on are: the computer is about... 3 years old, and at the time I was doing potentially CPU heavy work (encoding media files), but nothing I havent done hundreds/thousands of times before. so perhaps the computer is getting old and worn out? i wouldnt have thought so, though, as it isnt that old and i do take good care of it...

- the left shift key has started to work intermittently, strangely, it still seems to display the sticky keys window if i press it numerous times, but it will not produce secondary characters or capitalize letters. it seems to stop working for a few minutes, the work again, then stop again etc....

- the apostrophe has stopped printing, although i can still print the @ symbol (the same key) if i use right-shift.

other keys may also be malfunctioning but i have not discovered them yet.

this problem occurs on my inbuilt laptop keyboard, as well as an external keyboard i have tried, so it must be a problem within the computer itself.

please help with this problem, in this state my computer is basically useless for my work, and i dont want to buy a whole new computer for such small (but problematic) reason.
