Home Keys on laptop keyboard disabled/not working properly

My computer is an HP Pavilion G7 laptop, Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit. I've recently went through a lot of problems with this computer, specifically a corrupt user profile, so I ended up doing...a factory reset or something in that nature that fixed the problem, but it wiped everything off my computer. Before the reset, occasionally my keyboard would just disable and go into this mode where certain keys opened a variety of programs, and I had to shut off/restart the computer to fix it. But the keys worked fine, it was just when the keyboard went crazy was when the keys didn't work.

But now, a week or two after the reset, I went on my computer and the home keys and the enter key were disabled, and I did some online research and a lot say that the keyboard is shot and you have to replace it. The strangest thing was, this morning actually, I went on the computer and went to type and found the home keys were actually working. I left for a bit to start my morning and then came back, woke the computer up and turned on the internet, and found the keys disabled again.

I explained that story because it could be something involved with the computer's sleep function or its internet, as a maybe.

Heres a list of some of my computer specs:

Computer: HP Pavilion G7 Notebook PC x64
Processor: AMD 16-3420M APU with Radeon(tm) HD Graphics, 1500 Mhz, 4 Cores, 4 Logical Processors
    BIOS Version/Date: Insyde F.53, 10/24/2012
    SMBIOS Version: 2.7
Installed Physical Memory (RAM) 4.00 GB

I really need help...I have no idea how to fix this.

    Thanks in advance,
    J

firstly I would recommend downloading and installing all of the latest drivers for you laptop. especially any chipset and or ones directly related to the keyboard (most laptop keyboards use default windows ones so theres nothing to update, but laptops with hot keys and multimedia keys tend to use their own)

something else you can do is plug in a usb keyboard and test it, if the same keys on a usb keyboard dont work its not hardware related.
simply googling G7 keyboard throws up hundreds of user complaints so its not exactly a first time event theyve known to fail.

I actually used an external USB keyboard to type my previous reply, the keys do work on the external keyboard, so I guess it could be a hardware problem. I went to Device Manger -> Keyboards -> Standard PS/2 Keyboard and right clicked and selected "Update Driver Software" and it replied it was up to date. I went to Windows Update earlier before this post and downloaded all the updates it required, and this was while the keyboard was broken, thinking that would've been a fix. I actually don't know how to update the chipsets, I could try that but you would have to tell me how.

Before I replace the keyboard, I would like to know of anyway to fix this without having to order a new keyboard for this thing. Maybe I could remove it from the pc and examine it?

only trouble with laptop keyboards is they are a self sealed unit. you can effectively "unlaminate" the membrane panel but it wont show any physical signs of damage. also removing and replacing keys is a pain in the bum. especially on "macbook" style ones (square individual keys that poke through the upper chassis).

you can get a new keyboard for about £10 or $10 depending where you are which isnt exactly bank breaking in any terms.

Sorry for not making a reply earlier, I got busy. I will research into getting a replacement keyboard...

What are the chances of just the home keys disabling (a, s, d, f, j, k, l , ; and enter)? I somewhat think it could be
something maybe software related, as I remember that morning when it worked briefly...

My internal keyboard does have the volume, brightness, play and fast forward and various things on the function keys, I'm not sure what they are called, however. Could I have pressed one of those maybe? I just find this problem so strange as its associated with the home keys; I don't see it as random.

There are a few possibilities, replacing a laptop keyboard would be the last thing I would try after eliminating other possible reasons.

I do have a few questions.

Do you have any applications that have the ability to set keys?
Many do. What I'm really asking is did you intentionally configure keys in an application.

HP laptops also often come with keybaord apps - I'd have to look at your model information.

Are any of the "lock" (scroll lock, num lock) keys accidentially tapped?
Some external keyboards also have a fn lock.

and just to be sure - you only notice this after coming out of sleep?

Please fill in your SevenForums System Specs so I know more about the machine, there are a few G7 models
    - thanks
you can use the link in my signature Easy System Spec - there's a tool in the tutorial that makes it really easy.

How long have you had the machine?
    Is it still under warranty?

    Hello Sir,

I seem to be having a similar problem. Only the keys, Home, End, Right & Left direction keys arent responding. An external USB keyboard key is working. This led me to believe it could be a hardware issue (moisture etc.) however the new keyboard i order for my vostro 1014 (dell) laptop had the same issue, hence leading me to believe it is a software issue i.e. driver issue.

I have tried updating my driver it tells me its up to date. Have tried uninstalling it and on restart windows reinstalls my driver. I tried going on windows forum (Microsoft) and they were rambling about a possible Hotfix replacement. Please advise and let me know what do i do.

    debmit104,

This is an old thread. Please open a new thread in the same sub-forum as this thread Hardware & Devices - Windows 7 Help Forums for your issue.

Make sure your system specs are completely filled in.
See: Please add your SF Systems Specs by following this tutorial: System Info - See Your System Specs
    • In the System Manufacturer/Model Number field, manually type Desktop or Laptop adding it to the information already in the field.
    • Specify Custom Build as the manufacturer if it is not an OEM machine.
    • The tool does not fill in this information but it is very important if someone has to research drivers or hardware for your machine.
Log on to Sevenforums (SF) and let the tool fill in you System specs on your SF profile.

Full instructions are in the tutorial. It's a simple process and it makes that information readily available on your posts. You don't have to retype the information in any thread.

Click here to view your system specs on SevenForums.

Click on My System Specs in the lower left of any post by any member to see what is presented about their machine.

Please also provide a Speccy report. These will give members some hard information about your machine that they can use to help you trouble shoot the issue.
See: Speccy - Publish Snapshot of your System Specs

    Thanks

    Thanks
