USB Serial connector wont install USB malfunction

I purchased a generic usb to serial convertor cable and while it came with a disc with drivers it
    wont install.

Device manager has it listed as an unknown device and has this in the general info: Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)

The driver software installs but it still wont recognize the device.

Windows doesn't look like it has a generic driver for it either.

Do I have a faulty cable or are these things just a pain to install on newer OS's?

First, I've been through several of these and the ONLY one that I found would work is THIS one. I use it for interfacing to my wife's Singer Embroidery machine to transfer patterns.

However, how you installed it could be why it doesn't work. You have to FIRST install the drivers then connect the unit. If you connect the unit first in most cases the install will fail as Windows has already tried to install it and failed.

If you connected it first, reconnect the device and then go to the Device Manager, RIGHT click on the entry for the device and then LEFT click "uninstall". Also, check the box to uninstall the drivers. Then restart the PC and you can do a new install, first with the drivers and only connect the unit when the driver install tells you or in some they don't tell you but connect it after the install finishes.
