I installed some MSI utility and it lists some drivers that are not installed. Some Intel SVT one, I'll get the exact name later.

The utility was also the only way for me to update my BIOS.

I'm strongly suggesting you download either/both the C216 and/or C220 USB 3.0 driver from the Intel site, using the links I posted above. You didn't reply to my question about what you see in Device Manager, nor did you post a screenshot of your setup so that I could see, but do you have either C216 or C220?

If so, then you know which Intel driver installer file to download. If not, i.e. if this Device Manager item is also missing along with the USB 3.0 Root Hub then maybe it is part of what gets installed using either of these two Intel driver installers.

Again, the Intel installers are smart enough NOT to do anything if the required hardware is not present on your machine. So if you try the C216 installer it won't work if you have a C220 chipset, and vice versa. So it can't hurt to try them both.

I still feel like its a problem with what MSI put on their driver CD, and if you phoned them for support you could probably get to the bottom of it. But before wasting time on that I'd really just try the latest Intel USB 3.0 driver installer that they have on their web site. Worked perfectly for me, to upgrade my own setup from the 1.05 that ASUS provided as their "latest" to 1.09 which is what Intel has as their "latest". And it is GUARANTEED to install the USB 3.0 Root Hub, which is what is missing on your Device Manager and is obviously crucial (in my opinion).

Can't hurt to try it. And it could solve your problem right away.

The utility is called Live Update 5. That's what I used to update the BIOS and see what drivers are not installed. I'll post a list when I get home.

I went to MSI's website and downloaded the Intel USB3 driver and installed it. Now all of my USB3 ports work (front panel and rear I/O).
I could've swore that I installed that driver from the motherboard CD.

I'm going to download the drivers from MSI's site and save them on a thumb drive.

Now I have USB3 Root Hub in device manager.

FYI: most folks here will ONLY install the drivers from the website. Those drivers on the CD can be quite outdated by the time the product is sold.

    Good job getting it sorted!

As was advised by TVeblen, it is pretty much standard procedure to always go the manufacturer's web site for ALL of the latest software updates of EVERYTHING... Intel chipset utility, BIOS, USB and SATA drivers, video drivers, fingerprint reader, camera, whatever, etc.

Yes, the CD may have what you need to "get started" (or, apparently in the case of your USB 3.0 problem) maybe not so well. But for absolute sure, following the initial install it's always right to then make an "upgrade" pass with latest versions from the manufacturer's site.

My own habit is also to double-check the underlying vendor site for even more current software, e.g. Intel, AMD/nVidia, etc.

I'm going to download the drivers from MSI's site and save them on a thumb drive.
Huh? Didn't you just do that? Did you simply RUN them rather than SAVE them and then run them from where you saved them?

I know it's obviously just personal habit and style, but I have a "BBS" folder (still named the same as it was when I created it 20 years ago before web sites, when software updates used to be available via dial-up modems using individual phone numbers connecting with vendor "Bulletin Board Systems" mechanisms and TTY protocol to retrieve updates) where I store ALL software installer files and updates for ANYTHING (both free and non-free, hardware, software, whatever) that did not come from Microsoft. I currently have 257 sub-folders under \BBS, a number of which are "historical" (i.e. I no longer use or install those products) but I still keep them.

I also keep my "license keys" text files here in a "\BBS\Mycodes" sub-folder, obviously used when reinstalling licensed software.

Now I have USB3 Root Hub in device manager.
I'm not surprised. It's part of the USB 3.0 support package and is obviously installed by a "complete" USB 3.0 driver installer package, such as comes from Intel... and apparently also comes from MSI but just not properly placed on their driver CD.

When I posted my own screenshot of Device Manager, showing USB 3.0 Root Hub and you noticed that you didn't have that in your system, that was the "giant clue" that it was a driver issue. I've been pushing that as the solution ever since. And it's MSI's driver CD which is at at fault here, assuming you did actually pick THAT USB 3.0 installer feature from the driver CD and hadn't unwittingly overlooked it by accident. It's really a bit hard to believe they would package a wrong or incomplete driver installer on that CD and yet a complete and good one on their web site now, so maybe you just missed it... and got whatever Win7 built from Microsoft by default without the proper Intel driver support that is required but only comes from Intel (or the manufacturer) and must be installed outside of the main Windows install.

You never posted the screenshot you promised, of what is shown in Device Manager. Now would be a good time, now that everything is working.

I'm curious to know if you have the C216 or C220 chipset family on your MSI board.

I'm curious to know what driver version level you now show for your USB 3.0 support as obtained from the MSI site. How does it compare to the most recent 1.0.9.254 version which I'd urged you to download and install from the Intel site. Presumably the version on the MSI site is identical.

Glad you finally got everything working.

I just wanted to get this machine up and running so no drivers were saved. I'll do that once everything is in good working order. I'm now going through the hassle of getting my cable card activated. It was supposed to be working last night but that never happened.

    Nothing but frustration.
Returned the card, got another one and called to activate it. Won't work. Now a tech has to come to my house even though a cable box connected to the same outlet works fine.

I also bought Arcsoft TotalMedia 6. The key that was provided to me doesn't work.

Does everybody have this much trouble setting up a HTPC

Got a call from the Comcast tech and he got it working. He said all the numbers for the card were wrong in the system so he fixed that and said the viewing area was also incorrect. We were on the phone for maybe 5 minutes . Helps that he also has a InfiniTV 4.

I just have to leave it on so the channel guide could be updated. I also got TotalMedia to work. You can't input the key from within Microsoft Media Center. You have to do it on the desktop.
