Need Help w/Serial Trackball & USB to Serial Adapter, Not Worki

Hello Everyone,
I'm trying to install a Kensington Expert Mouse four button trackball on my Windows 7 Pro PC (I'm disabled, trackballs easier to use than mouse). Tech support at Kensington said I should be able to plug the trackball into the PC and use it as a two button mouse. Problem is, the trackball has a serial connection and my PC has no serial port. I connected the trackball to a serial to USB adapter and installed the drivers that came with the adapter. Nothing happened after that, the trackball did not work and nothing was added in Device Manager or Devices and Printers. I tried reinstalling the drivers for the adapter again and tried using the trackball and it worked for a few moments however when I accidentally bumped my PCs optical mouse, the trackball stopped working and I haven't been able to get it going since. I also tried disabling the optical mouse and rebooting my PC but that was no help, the trackball still did not function.

In Devices and Printers, the adapter is listed as "Prolific USB-to-serial Comm. Port (COM3)" in the PCs USB mouse is listed as "USB optical mouse". When I right-click the Prolific icon there are four menu items, Mouse Settings, Create Shortcut, Troubleshoot and Properties. When I click Properties>Hardware the header "Device Function Summary" reads:
"manufacturer: Prolific
location: Port_#0003.#0004
Device status: this device is working properly."

When I clicked Properties in Hardware, a window appeared with another four tabs; General, Port Settings, Driver and Details. Under Port Settings it read:
bits per second: 9600
data bits: 8
parity: none
stop bits: one
flow control: none

When I clicked the Advanced button, the new window had the option "use FIFO buffers" checked and both Receive and Transmit buffers were set to high and "COM Port Number" was set to COM3.

Under the Driver tab, the two driver files listed were ser2pl64.sys and serenum.sys. The info at the bottom of this window read "provider: Prolific Technology
file version:" then copyright and digital server info.

When I right-click USB Optical Mouse >Hardware >Properties >Driver >Driver Details drivers listed are
mouclass.sys and mouhid.sys.

Sorry for the lengthy note, just trying to provide enough info.
