So you have a 3.1Mhz. cpu now and the largest I'm finding Amazon for 90.00 is a 3.4 model 270. You could safely upgrade in my limited research but you won't even notice that small of an increase and for sure not worth 90.00. Get a ssd of 90.00 and save for a custom build down the road.

If it would be an un-noticeable difference, its not worth it.

The real question was, will the computers BIOS allow for it? But that question becomes moot if that the best upgrade possible.

I saw that but I'll bet if you research this model it was likely offered with the 3.4Mhz. 270 but you just wound up with the 3.1 it's the same chip family and likely the exact same bios will drive both but the big picture is it's of no big gain so you'll be much much better off to save the 90.00 and apply that towards a better desktop later.

I just checked his chip it's an AM3
He should be able to use any AM3 on the market including Phenoms

965 955 925 ect... those are all phenom quad cores if you can get one of those it will up the performance by 30% and more ram and you are set you could possibly get it to game to depending on the PSU a low profile card would do a decent job

If you can find someone with a Phenom 965be to drop in and try it ? That chip is a great chip but getting harder to find. I think your CPU options door is closing as the only Amazon new AMD 965 shown was very expensive.
