disc burning trouble

Hi Folks. This problem occurred last year when I was trying to burn some data onto a disc using the Windows software: insert a blank CD (TDK) ;open E from My Computer; drag file into window and hit burn. It would start the process then the window would close and the disc remain spinning, refusing to eject. Clicking on the E partition in My Computer started a search that just went on and on. I had to do a restart and eject the disc at start-up. The company I bought the computer from said I should try 3rd party software but my Roxio 2011 came up error time after time. I bought a new DVD burner (Samsung) and it worked for a while. Now I come to use it again (I don't use it very often) it's displaying all the same problems once more. There's something wrong with Windows or something is conflicting (ITunes?) and driver updates,or firmware updates make no difference. Any ideas?

Does this new burner play disks perfectly? Problems are only with burning?

Are your most recent problems while using Roxie? Have you looked at any other burning program such as ImgBurn?

There have never been any problems playing disks. The problem is with Windows Burn to Disk and also with Roxio Burn Data Disk or Burn Music Disk; maybe others as I've never had need to use anything else. Burning a disk from ITunes works perfectly. I've done all necessary updates and upgrades to software, firmware and drivers.

I would purchase software like Nero or Creator NXT or even download some free programs that do the same job. I will post some free ones with links.

1. The Official ImgBurn Website
2. Features | BurnAware
3. CDBurnerXP: Free CD and DVD burning software
4. Ashampoo Burning Studio FREE Free Download - Create ISO

I hope that you can find a program that will suit your needs, I always find the paid programs are much better then the free programs but if you only burn a few disks a year then a free version would be fine.

Are your Windows updates current?
Prior to SP1 I had a problem with drag & drop to a CD/DVD. It's a long shot but this hotfix sorted it
An update is available for the UDF file system driver (Udfs.sys) for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2
(see issue 3)

I downloaded and installed IMGBurn and not only does it work perfectly but it also allowed me to burn the file as ISO 9660 which is mandatory for my BluRay player firmware upgrade which is what all this fuss is about. I am greatly indebted to you RitualJman. I will now try the hotfix from mjf - thank-you very much - because it annoys me when Windows doesn't do what it's supposed to do.

Hey mjf, despite keeping my Windows updates scrupulously up to date that 'hotfix' fixed the problem. Thank-you.
I've now got the MS software performing correctly plus I have some great new burning software too. Getting by with a little help; thank-you both.

It's good it seems to have fixed your problem. It drove me nuts at the time but I would have thought SP1 might have fixed it.

Burning videos to a bluray disc
I converted a season of a TV show (12 episodes) and would like to burn to a bluray disc. Is that possible? I tried IMGBURN, but it won't accept the bluray disc, unless I'm missing a setting? Any programs that would accomplish this? Thanks,

Disc burning question
When I use Windows 7 to burn data or jpgs to a disc, the list of what I’m going to burn always includes “desktop.ini” ready to be written to disc. I just burned one driver file to a CD-R and when I look at the disc directory it lists the file I want plus “Files Ready to Be Written to Disc (1)”...
