Disk1 Unknown Not Initialized error for external HDD

I have a 1TB external my passport USB hard disk.It was working fine till last week but when i plugged it in today windows 7 didn't recognize it.I can see the hard disk in Disk management as "Disk1 Unknown Not initialized" but can't see it under my computer. Also the hard disk light is blinking continuously .When i plug it in USB port it tries to read data and the there is a clicking sound. It clicks few times and then it goes completely silent.
I have tried using various partition tools like MiniPartation and TestDisc etc but they don't even recognize the hard disk

Any help is much appreciated. My priority is recovering data I can buy a new hdd if i can recover data.
Please let me know if u need more info.I am posting a screenshot of disk manager for reference.

Thanks!!!!

My Passport is Western Digital. Isn't it?

I am not placing much hopes on your drive. It doesn't even show the capacity.

Anyway let us check your drive with Datalifeguard Diagnostics for DOS.

Please see this post and execute. Please help, disk 1 unknown not initialized (western digital external)

You can try to recover the data with a live Linux CD or if you don't have one, use this.

I just ran the utility dlgdiag5 and it is showing error code 202 which as per wd knowledge base means

"201 Non-WD Drive The drive does not have a WD serial number. This error can occur on non-Western Digital drives. It may also happen when the wrong version of diagnostic utility is used. It is also possible to see this error on defective Western Digital drives."

So DOS is also not detecting HDD. I booted system with pen drive and then plugged in hard disk and then ran the utility. My doubt is if DOS is not detecting hdd the how come disk manager is able to detect it

I always plugin the external drive and then boot into DOS. Can you repeat it that way?

Shut down your PC.

Plugin your external drive and the pen-drive and boot into DOS and run the diagnostics.

May be you will get the same result. Let us see. If you get the same result then obviously your drive is already dead.

In any case try running a live Linux CD and boot from it and see as recommended by whs.

But considering that you are in India and a 900 MB download is going to take a lot of time, and our main aim is just to see whether Linux can see the drive in the first place, I recommend downloading Lucid Puppy iso and creating a bootable pendrive with Rufus.

So you may download Lucid Puppy (Ubuntu-Compatible Build) lupu-528.005.iso I have chosen this because it is only a 132.6 MB download. http://puppylinux.org/main/Download%...%20Release.htm Create your bootable pen drive with this ISO using Rufus 1.4.6 (58KB) Rufus - Create bootable USB drives the easy way

Boot from this USB pen drive with your external HDD already connected.

Once you boot into Lucid Puppy check whether the external drive is shown at the bottom left of the screen.

Have a look here. Lucid Puppy way to recover files from a non-bootable computer (See the first screenshot of Lucid Puppy therein to identify the external drives)

EDIT: I am retiring for the day and will see you tom. Good night.

I have a 15mpbs connection so it didn't took much time.Things are changing pretty fast here. You can get a home broadband connection upto 30Mbps pretty cheap these days in India.

ok..I took jumnaji's advice installed puppy linux on usb drive. Two thing
1) I switched off the system then plugged usb and hdd and then powered it on.It started booting from usb but got stuck at loading kernel modules. So i just unplugged the hard disk and the puppy home screen came up immediately. At this point i plugged in hdd again

2) Linux is able to detect wd hdd as i can see it in storage under system but when i ran mount/unmount tool it was not able to detect the wd hdd.It only detected the hdd in my laptop and external usb drive. I have attached a rar file that has 3 images that i clicked by my phone.

Please have a look at them and advice.

Please go to Western Digital website webpage for your exact model of Passport, find and download the version of Datalifeguard Diagnostics applicable to the drive, under Support. ( I don't have a Western Digital external drive and so I can only give you an arm-chair advice )

You may also download the Windows version install and check your drive.

Testing the drive with the manufacturer's utility is the ultimate in deciding the status of your drive.

That Lucid Puppy did not load with the external drive already connected does not augur well.

Connecting the Western Digital drive after Lucid Puppy loaded, did you "refresh"?

Another thing I want to point out is that you should always disconnect all other external drives/pendrives and connect only the required drives so that there is nothing else to confuse.

Also I would have appreciated a full screenshot of Lucid Puppy screen showing the drives at the bottom left.( There is a screen capture utility in Puppy under Graphics) If after refreshing also your 1TB drive does not appear at the bottom left as sdd1 or does not mount, then what to say?!!!!!!
