Ethan mate sounds too simple have you run a cleaner disk through themachine? If you have and it still will not work then you may need to replace it- they are real cheap these days. Plus it is so easy see this

Any drivers windows should take care of in any case.

No probs mate in any case even if you have to replace it is so easy as you can see in the video and are very cheap too. As for drivers unless you get a very unusual type such as a blu ray and then I don't think it has to have any special drivers (I stand to be corrected).

You do though have to make sure the new drive is a SATA connection if the old one is and unless the machine is really quite old it is almost bound to be a SATA drive.

Yes perhaps I should have put it more succinctly - when you get the new drive check to see what the drives' connections are - I have no doubt the machine is a SATA connection.

You see it has been known for someone to buy something's like this off of Ebay and find it is not the right thing. My brother in the UK is a prime example of buying what he thought was an OEM Windows 7 and it turned out to be an old used Dell disk and to cut a VERY long story short it took some sorting out not to mention a lot of angst.

Aren't the LT burners P-SATA? It's a 10-15 dollar part on evil bay, just replace it. Did it ever work?

Well seeing as this model was released with Windows 64bit and DDR3 RAM a SATA HDD etc etc I would expect it to be a SATA optical at least on the videos I have seen it is but I stand to be corrected as usual.
