External HDD - Windows Explorer not responding when accessing

Hi, I have a 1TB Toshiba external HDD and really need to recover important files (mainly memorable pictures of family events).

2 days ago, it was fine until I was copying large files and then the progress bar when copying just disappears so I decided to do an attrib -h -r -s /s /d g:\*.* on the NTFS HDD. Was that right? I think now that it wasn't.

Now it really takes too long to open the folders and files, even right-clicking it too. Any help, will be great.

Sometimes, when a input a path to access it, it shows "g: not accessible, device is not ready" too.

Autoplay still shows it when connected, it,s just that accessing the folders inside bugs me.

Thanks.

It is still ok in Disk Management though..

Your results show that the drive is recognized but the system can not access a file system, or a file system is missing.
This could be caused by a controller failure on the drive itself.

One possibility is that the file system is just corrupted. You could try the procedure below to test to see if this is the case:

Download Minitool Partition Wizard
Free download Magic Partition Manager Software, partition magic alternative, free partition magic, partition magic Windows 7 and server partition software - Partition Wizard Online
You can download the version to install it in Windows or the version to burn a bootable CD or USB stick. The bootable CD is a very useful tool to have for many other types of problems, particularly when they involve the system drive.

In PW, find and use the tool to "Rebuild the MBR".
How to Rebuild MBR with partition manager - Partition Wizard Rebuild MBR Help
When that is done, make sure the drive has a drive letter. If not, give it one in PW.

Wow @TVeblen, i really appreciate your comment. Trying it now..

But what concerns me is, will this method still let me get back my files (i.e. the images) and others?

Again, thanks a lot!

Rebuilding the MBR will not damage any files on the drive - it simply resets the file table so the system knows how to find the files.

But if it doesn't work then you have bigger problems then just the file table.

Accessing drives in Windows Explorer takes a long time
I'm not sure why this is happening, but if I attempt to open a drive in Windows Explorer, it takes a really long time (sometimes several minutes). It takes that long for the progress bar on the address bar to fill up. Does anyone know why this would be?
