Intel pulls SSD firmware update amid Windows 7 issues

Quote:
Intel has temporarily pulled its just-released TRIM firmware update (02HA) and associated SSD Toolbox from their download site, following a number of reported problems with the new software. Details remain scarce at the moment, but according to several posts on Intel's support forums, users are left with a disk read error and no way to load Windows after rebooting from a seemingly successful firmware upgrade.

I'm one of the lucky ones who didn't seem to have problems with this update. But I was a bit nervous after seeing some of these stories. Of course, I'm keeping an eye on the Intel site...as I will want to upgrade to the non-broken version of the firmware when it becomes available.

Thanks for the info.

There were some guys on the Intel forum who were itching to get their hands on the update - shame that they had to be the guinea pigs to find the incompatibility with Windows 7.

I applied the update and I have no problems. I will however be watching for an update and will move to it once it becomes available.

I have one of the new Intel drives and was looking forward to this firmware update to enable TRIM.

Thankfully I missed the fact it had been released, so didn't get to know about it until these problems started cropping up. So I won't be ugrading the firmware until this has been thoroughly researched and fixed by Intel.

Interestingly apparently TRIM only works if you are using the Microsoft AHCI drivers - I have 'upgraded' to the Intel IMSM v8.9 driver already, so even if I had upgraded the firmware TRIM would probably not work and the only way to optimise the drive would be to manually run the optimisation tool - maybe Intel should have timed an IMSM update as well before doing this?

This episode has also justified in my eyes the decision I have now taken to split my drives, with the OS on the SSD but the data migrated to a seperate HDD. So, if I lose the SSD I only have to reinstall the OS and programmes, and not worry about the data.
