an intel core 2 quad q6600 would blow your pentium processor out of the water in terms of performance..
but it wont really blow your mind.. its a OLD processor and will still perform poorly in modern games. it will be great for games made in the same time as it 2008-2010~.
quad core is way better for gaming, regardless of how well optimised games are. some games will dedicated an entire core to just decoding audio, if youve only got 2 then thats one gone already. some games put AI on a separate core to, so more is better.
id stick with what youve got now and save up some pennies. you could build a decent gaming rig based on a quad core amd processor, something like an A10 7700k would be the difference between night and day compared to what you have now. for £200 inc mobo and ram youd have a complete new system able to play the latest games. (gpu dependant)
The processor you posted though is only around $40 used, and if the performance difference is in any way significant it will probably be exactly what I'm looking for. I already play most games I have on high settings with good fps. I'm just looking for a cheap way to make my pc faster and get me a little boost. Most Ganges I play are mmos, or skyrim, slightly older games or games with slightly less demanding graphics.
I have no idea how to replace a motherboard. I just scraped a computer with an amd processor recently because I didn't know the first thing about motherboards and installing them. It had ddr3 ram and all.
I don't have the time to learn about installing motherboards, what type I need, etc, and I don't have $200 plus dollars for upgrades.
Based on my knowledge and what you're saying, I think I can get pretty close by getting a $50 processor, and get what I want.
I just need to know if the processor you recommended is really the best I can get. And I would love if you could compare it to the processor where they said I could upgrade up to 9xxxx. Because the xxx`s make it very vague, but if my Amazon link I just posted is compatible I'd like to know if it's better
Another performance increase would be to look into getting a Solid State drive. It would speed up a older system easily, and the prices are falling more everyday. It is more expensive then a standard hard drive, but its really fast compared to HDD. If anything would blow your mind, I think a solid state drive would. Granted it won't help much for gaming compared to a new video card or processor...but everything you do will see a huge increase in speed.

the core 2 quad q6600 go stepped was the best processor for the lga 775 socket set you have.
forget about the ghz number. the bigger the number no longer means the better performance.
its all about architecture and how well its coded for.
any of the core 2 range not just the quad will be an improvement over your pentium D they were always budget processors.
you could learn how to change a mobo and what cpu requires what socket in less time than it took to type that post

There is no Q9xxx series on that list. You are trying to make a Ferarri from a Volkswagen, I don't think it's going to pan out the way you want and you will have wasted some hard-earned cash.
Even if you could sell yours and buy one in the $350 range, I suspect you'd have about equal performance. A decent entry level gaming rig would likely start in the $800 ballpark. Others may know more about that. :)
Well I got the q6600 for $50 bucks. Honestly I'm not too far away from where I want to be performance wise, especially for what I do.
I'll probably learn to overclock it, then I'll overclock it privacy around 2.7, just to have something safe. I'm guessing that would get me exactly what I'm looking for.
It might seem silly but it took me awhile to learn even Joe to install a processor. I've come so far in computer knowledge and I'm close to being able to build my own.
Since I'm close, I'll just install, overclock (I'll have to learn that), and if I need more performance I might learn about replacing the hard drive. Learning those things would also help me get closer to knowing what I need to know about rebuilding computers, but I wanna take it one affordable step at a time. And since In close to what I want, I think that $50 processor will do.

theres a video from one of my favourite youtubers. its not vastly long, but will teach you'll ever need to know about building a rig.. well not everything, but more than youll need to know for a first time build.
Back when i started.. i had to read a thing called a book!! and not much has changed
I went one further and omitted the book. I stripped down an old Pentium 166 and put it back together. Gave it a good cleaning while I was at it, and it fired right back up after. Then realized just how easy it is to build a computer, and been building since then.
As far as tools needed to build a computer, a Philips screwdriver and maybe an anti-static wristband is all you need.
