Can't transfer large file to external drive

I'm trying to do a simple back up. One 12g folder transfer to an external hard drive. Drag and dropping will will stop working about 1/4 of the way through. I tried TeraCopy and that gets through about 6g before it stops working.

    Any idea what is wrong?

How is your hard drive formatted? Is it fat32 or NTFS?

    It should be NTFS.

Can you make sure? Go to computer, right click on the drive and click properties

In general tab you will see File System: NTFS or Fat32

    Fat32 can't hold files over 4gb.

No need to reformat, you want it as NTFS, not Fat32.

Try compressing the folder/file and moving it to the drive.
