Still no luck. Everything seems to be working fine in device manager.

Wow that was some list now backtracking to the 5th post could you scroll through that list and try the properties for each item.
Also is that yellow triangle still there for that SS? as the only refs I can find for SS in that panel is for solid state stuff.
Without ploughing back through I am wondering if I asked you to do these if not try them and see if anything comes up.

https://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/433-disk-check.html < use the /f option in Option 2 ifnecessary
Now just as a matter of interest I am wondering if you have backed up all your data so far as I am wondering if a reinstall might be the way to go, and if so this can be used and it will clear the machine of all the bloatware it comes with.
Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7
SS is just the name i used for my compute. No relation to solid state. I have since changed my PC name
I went back to post 5 and checked the properties of each item. Everything seems to be working fine. There are a few items that say no driver installed for this device. I tried to update the driver and it says it's up to date. The list of items that say this are as follows:-
Direct Memory Access Controller
High Precision Event Timer
Intel (R) 82802 Firmware Hub Device
Intel (R) ICH9 Family SMBus Controller - 2930
Numeric Data Processor
Programmable Interrupt Controller
System Timer
(i have a screen shot of each of these if you need)
I also ran the suggested test you recommended.
Test 1: sfc scan. Everything is good (see screenshot)
Test 2: checkdisk scan with /f option. Everything is good
I even tried re-installing windows 7. no luck.
the only thing i can think of now is maybe i should go back to windows vista.
Chobbs mate as maxie has said the problem looks to be with the chipset and these are the drivers for it http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?os=4062&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&sw_lang=&product=3818852
Mate don't go back to Vista as anyway I would reckon it would be a pain to do that too. Try the chipset drivers first.
Sorry Brian missed that by being lazy and not going back through
I am sort of out of ideas myself the only thing I would do myself now is to replace the drive and use the tutorial for clean install Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7
No problem John .. Not sure if a Clean Install will help any as that is when the problem first started .. Maybe a corrupt OS is to blame ...
Yes mate I was just wondering re the age of the drive though seeing it is getting on a bit - as in physical wear on the thing.
Maybe a surface test with Partition Wizard might be the go??
Chobbs if you want to try it download this Best Free Partition Manager Freeware and free partition magic for Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows Vista and Windows XP 32 bit & 64 bit. MiniTool Free Partition Manager Software Home Edition. run the program and > click on the drive to be tested > click on surface test > a small window with lots of small squares will open > Start now. It will take some time to run but will check the actual physical surface of the drive and to some extent the read / write heads. See my pic
You can of course run a hard drive test with say Seatools SeaTools for Windows | Seagate
this will pick up errors on the drive too but more along the lines of read / write the data in the sectors etc
I'll try both the methods.
As for the chipset drivers, it is showing up because i did not install the chipset drivers as before since the fresh install.
I'll let you'll know how it goes.
I think this is a driver issue. Nothing to do with hard disk integrity, but i'm no computer expert
