Unable to mirror all but last partition on drive

Hi all,

I'm coming across a very strange problem with Windows 7 Ultimate x64. I have two 4TB drives, one with 5 partitions and data, and the other completely empty. Both are dynamics disks.

When I try to mirror most of the partitions, I simply get "The operation failed to complete because the Disk Management console view is not up-to-date. Refresh the view by using the refresh task. If the problem persists close the Disk Management console, then restart Disk Management or restart the computer."

Obviously, I have restarted both disk management and the computer without any improvement.

I tried using diskpart to do the same operation and it gave me this:

DISKPART> add disk 1

Virtual Disk Service error:
The disk's extent information is corrupted.

DiskPart has referenced an object which is not up-to-date.
Refresh the object by using the RESCAN command.
If the problem persists exit DiskPart, then restart DiskPart or restart the
computer.

For some reason, when I try to mirror the last partition on the drive, it works fine and starts syncing.

Surely Windows 7 supports mirroring multiple partitions on the same drive?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The problem may be with the dynamics. Is there any reason those partitions have to be dynamic partitions ?

Just so I can set them up as mirrors. They have to be dynamic.

Same problem

I'm getting the same errors trying to add mirrors. It hadn't occurred to me to try mirroring the last volume on the disk, but when I did it worked and started to resync. It's a mystery.

I'll post back if I figure out more.

Welcome aboard rakslice. ( I saw your post in "superuser" and for a moment I thought you may be Dragon Curve till I looked into this thread again. ) Keep us updated if things turn bright.

Hi Dragon Curve,

I am definitely shooting in the dark.

My own perception is that if you have two drives you want to mirror these should have been ideally formatted with Windows 7 to start with so that these have identical 128MB MSR (Microsoft System Reserved) partitions with the necessary flags inserted in the right place..

So you may try formatting the second 4 TB drive (on to which you want to mirror) with Windows Disk Management, then convert it to dynamic and then try mirroring.

Found what seems to be a solution

Had a similar problem with not being able to mirror my 3GB drive, tried reboots etc. The main volume was ~3TB, with 50MB of unallocated space for safety. Finally got the problem to go away by extending the main volume by 1MB. Seems like some sort of Windows bug that got cleared by doing the extend.

(I intentionally leave a bit of space at the end because I've had the situation where the second disk was ever so slightly smaller than the first, and Windows would not allow me to mirror without rebuilding the volume.)
